Emergency Medical Technician Schools

Emergency Medical Technicians or EMTs perform a fast paced and exciting career designed to help in emergency medical situations. Demand is high for qualified and accredited EMTs. Salary is projected to increase as the need for more EMTs increases.

Emergency Medical Technician Training

To become an emergency medical technician (EMT), a person has to first obtain a high school diploma or GED equivalent. After that is accomplished, the next step is to enter into a formal or accredited emergency medical technician training program. These programs usually contain three different levels of education including EMT-basic, EMT-intermediate, and EMT-paramedic. These levels are progressive learning, the easiest starting at EMT-basic and the most advanced being Paramedic. A person training to become an EMT can expect to be in school from between six months to two years, depending on how far advanced as an emergency medical tech they wish to become.

An EMT- basic program curriculum puts emphasis on emergency skills such as patient assessment, physical exams, semi-automatic defibrillation, also dealing with respiratory, trauma, and cardiac emergencies, bleeding, fractures, airway obstruction, and assisting in emergency childbirth and administering medication. An EMT- basic also learns how to maintain and handle emergency equipment including splints, stretchers, oxygen systems, and suction devices.

To graduate in an EMT-basic training program a person must pass a written and practical “hands- on” examination administered by the NREMT or the State Licensing agency.

An EMT-intermediate level program consists of the same things of an EMT-basic but performs in a more advanced way. For example, EMT-intermediates learn to use advanced airway devices, intravenous fluids, and manual defibrillators. An EMT- intermediate also has to complete a written and practical exam, but in addition to that, 30 to 300 hours of training can be required depending on the extent of practice.

EMT- paramedics are the most advanced in their field. Paramedic training is conducted at a technical school or community college and can take between one to two years, depending on the intensity of study. An EMT- paramedic receives training in physiology, and anatomy, as well as advanced medical skills. EMT- paramedics will administer emergency medications and perform a broader band of procedures compared to EMT- basic and EMT- intermediate.

Extensive clinical and field experience, along with extensive class work, is required.

All Emergency Medical Technicians have to pass a licensing exam and take refresher courses and continuing education courses.

Although regarded as two different disciplines, medical coders and billers work hard to coordinate their efforts to meet patient and health insurance billing needs of doctors, clinics, hospitals, home health care service agencies, and similar businesses in the health care network as well as assuring healthcare providers get paid for all procedures and materials rendered.

If you opt to work in a small medical office, chances are you will be the medical biller and coder. But in the larger offices you could be doing strictly coding and your focus would be on pinning down specific codes for diagnoses, procedures and materials provided, and then the medical biller would take over and generate the claims for the services.

Medical coders work closely with health care providers, medical billers, and health information departments in hospitals to coordinate healthcares insurance and healthcare professionals billing needs. The medical coding process involves 5 stages:

1. coding
2. editing
3. quality assurance
4. quality control
5. submitting final output to clients, or the medical billing department

The combination of these code processes tells the payer what was wrong with the patient, whether treatment was necessary, and what services were performed. This makes it easier to handle these claims and lets heath care insurance companies identify and reimburse the provider on a predetermined basis.

It is the responsibility of the medical biller to assure that health insurance companies and patients are accurately billed, and that the provider gets paid. If a claim is denied, the medical biller pin-points and addresses any issues to appeal a claim denial. Also the medical billing profession falls into the customer service category and so therefore must be professional and able to communicate with the medical coding department.

Medical Billing and Coding Salary

There is a lot of variables to consider when it comes to salary time. Keep in mind that the demand for certified medical coders and billers is on the rise. Some of the things to consider would be your training, experience and the job location. How is the economy in the area where you are currently living or would you consider moving.

Dialysis Technician Job Description

Dialysis technicians work in a specialized part of the health care industry closely with individuals whose kidneys are failing. They are vital to he field as they are the only people trained specifically for kidney dialysis care. They have to specialize in maintaining and monitoring hemodialysis machines that perform the duties of a kidney which is that of removing wastes from the patients blood safely. A dialysis tech prepares the patients and performs any necessaary treatment after the dialysis has been completed.

Other important tasks of dialysis technicians include cleaning the area where the blood will be extracted, explaining the procedure and calculating blood flow and fluid removal. They also record the patient’s condition before and after the procedure by noting temperature, blood pressure, weight and respiratory rate.

Dialysis technicians must be patient and pay attention to detail because they have to look after patients before, during and after the dialysis procedure. These technicians must make sure that the patient’s vital signs continue to be normal and that they remain in stable condition.
Most dialysis technicians are employed by hospitals and work directly under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician. Dialysis techs also work in doctors offices or in a dialysis unit that is run through private companies.

For those patients who come in on an outpatient basis, they may have little contact with the dialysis nurse, so the dialysis technician is their only source of contact and information concerning their health. That doesnt mean the dialysis technician has enough education to provide a prognosis for the future, but the technician can pass the patients concerns along to the doctor who can discuss the patients concerns with him.
As a dialysis technician, you can expect to work an average work-week of at least 40 hours depending on the needs of whatever hospital or doctors office you may be employed at. As with any job, schedules are known to fluctuate.

Dialysis Technician Job Salary Range

The health care industry is booming, and this career is no different. Jobs for dialysis technicians are expected to grow faster than average over the next decade. This job growth stems from advancements in dialysis technology and the increase in the number of dialysis patients.

In 2009 dialysis technicians made an average salary of $29,000. Those with more training and experience in their specialized industry can expect to earn an average of salary of $34,300 a year.

Some variables that will effect your annual income include your geographic and job location, your previous job experience, and training. As your experience grows, so will your salary and benefits as these usually go hand in hand in a career field where you must take regular training courses to learn new equipment and procedures. So the more you train, the more you can expect to earn as a dialysis technician.

The benefits for dialysis techs usually include health insurance, sick leave, paid holidays and paid vacations.

The most common degree for laboratory technicians is an associate of applied science degree. Some students may pursue a certificate program in a career-specific field or bachelors degree in a related scientific field. Technicians will gerally work under the supervision of a technologist who has more education, experience and training than a technician. Medical and clinical laboratory technicians have less responsibilty and perform less complex tests and laboratory procedures than technologists.

Some students may pursue a certificate program in a career-specific field or bachelors degree in a related scientific field such as an Associate of Applied Science in Laboratory Technician which is a 2-year undergraduate degree program designed to prepare students for immediae entry in the workforce. Certified Nursing Assistant Schools

Many people who look for a career in the medical field that has a short schooling program and easy placement often look at becoming a certified nursing assistant or CNA. Although this career does not offer high pay, it does offer rewarding work in that CNAs often build strong relationships with their patients and many times enjoy seeing them improve or even recover.

Certified Nursing Assistant Schooling

Most CNA schools offer programs that are designed to work around the schedules of people who already work or who have children. This being the case, a student should not have a problem finding a program during the weekend or evening if their schedule calls for it. Most programs will last from 3 weeks for full time classes, clinical hours, and practical training and up to 8 weeks for a part time program. There are physical as well as emotional and mental challenges that have to be met to become a CNA.

Programs for becoming a CNA are usually offered at technical schools, community colleges, and even some hospitals will offer a program for CNA certification.

Some of the skills needed to become a certified nurse assistant are:

  • use of basic medical equipment
  • emergency procedures
  • daily care procedures such as feeding, bathing, and dressing
  • cleaning rooms and making beds
  • performing range of motion exercises
  • legal issues and rights and responsibilities
  • medical terminology
  • CPR

Certified Nurse Assistant programs are often very affordable and some may even be free. Most programs are preformed for around $500 to $1000. Some medical facilities will pay the cost of schooling if the CNA will sign a contract to work for them for a specified time, usually around 6 months. Financial aid is also usually available for those who qualify.

Prospective CNAs have to take a certification exam after the course has been completed. After this exam is passed a CNA is now qualified to begin work.

Certified Nurse Assistant Salary

As in most employments and technician salaries, location and other factors play a factor in salary potential. On the low end, a CNA will earn around $20,000 per year. The high end is just under $30,000 per year. The average starting salary is between $11 per hour and $14 per hour. As the medical field goes, this is salary potential is low, but most people use CNA certification as a stepping stone to higher paying medical careers, such as LVNs or RNs.

Most health care facilities understand that the work of a CNA is not easy and the pay is not high, and they do their best to make the nursing staff content. Also, for CNAs who have higher performance, higher salaries and bonuses are sometimes offered.

Working as a CNA can be beneficial for people who want to pursue a career in medicine, but have to work while they do this. As most CNA work is done in a shift schedule, careful planning can leave room to continue education and work at the same time. It can also be beneficial to a person who is not sure if they want to work in the medical field. Since it does not cost much money and the course is short, a person will not have much invested if they decided a career in medicine is not right for them.

All in all, most CNAs enjoy their work and find it very fulfilling. So whether it is used as a full time career or as a stepping stone to something else in the medical field, if a person wants to help and care for others, they cannot go wrong in choosing a career as a CNA.

Veterinary Technician Schools

Pet and animal owners today expect the most superior health care available to them. This is where veterinarians and veterinary technicians and technologists come into play. Love and compassion for people and animals are the two main requirements for a veterinary technician and technologist, but schooling, internship, experience, and projected salary are all factors to consider when deciding if becoming a veterinary technician would be right for you. Though hard work and dedication, your dream of working with animals as a vet tech can be made into a reality.

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN AND TECHNOLOGIST TRAINING

There are two steps that have to be accomplished to become an accredited veterinary tech. The first is graduating from a 2 year or 4 year technical program for aspiring veterinary techs, depending on how in depth a person desires their training to be. A vet technician can usually obtain their certificate from a two year technical school, but to become a veterinary technologist, a person must obtain a degree from a four year university. A few veterinary technician schools may offer courses to obtain a degree to become a technologist. Whether a person desires to become a vet technician or technologist, they both need to be careful to choose a technical school or university that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. The second requirement is to take and pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE).

The AAVSB, or American Association of Veterinary State Boards, has identified seven major areas of expertise typical of a veterinary technician. These areas are dentistry procedures, animal nursing, anesthesia, surgical prep and assisting, radiology and ultrasound, laboratory procedures, and pharmacy and pharmacology. They also need to be totally familiar with all laboratory and medical equipment required in doing surgery and laboratory work.

After completing a veterinary course, the student must pass the VTNE as previously mentioned. The VTNE has oral, written, and practical portions that have to be completed. This exam is designed to access the competency level of each applicant. It also guarantees to the public and prospective employers that the veterinary tech is capable enough to complete all duties that would be required by them either in a veterinary hospital or clinic.

When a veterinary tech enters the work field, he or she will work under the close supervision of a licensed vet tech or a veterinarian for on the job training in working with and caring for animals. Some of these animals are hurt and scared and can easily become unruly with fear.

Medical Billing and Coding Job Description

On average, the salaries of an entry level billing specialist is around $25,000. A certified medical billing and coding specialist can have a variety of job options to choose from, usually due to their educational background. Their highly developed skills and training allow them to enjoy a respectable income more so than just someone who works in an office without any kind of certification or furthered education. Medical billing and coding salary can go as high as $50,000 per year. At an entry level point billing and coding specialists should expect closer to $34,000 per year, but as the promotions come so does an increase in salary. Medical specialists who work as independent contractors can earn an hourly average of $10-$12.

So the more you train, the more you can expect to earn as a dialysis technician.

The benefits for dialysis techs usually include health insurance, sick leave, paid holidays and paid vacations.
